Final Editorial:
With the majority of students in school being technologically smart, much of the youth in our country are failing to realize the dangers in all this advancement. Our generations people skills have completely deteriorated, as well as our caring for others as much. Also, a lot of teens do not realize the dangers that online technology can create.
We no longer have to leave the house to do anything. We can shop, chat, do homework, and play games on-line. Although we are now connected to each other more than ever, it is not in the same personal way that it used to be. Even when we are forced to be around other people, like sitting on the bus riding to or from school, we have ways of keeping apart. Our i-pods, cell phones, and other devices can make sure that we never have to get out of our comfort zone and talk to anyone other than our best friends.
Along with our people skills, our health is going down the drain with it. We can sit all day never having to get up, burn a few calories and see or do something in person. Now even some school is online. According to the Distance Education and Training Council, four million students are taking classes online currently. If we keep going at the pace we are going, soon not just college will be online, but high school too. Jobs will be lost, and students speaking and negotiating skills will deteriorate even more. Although it seems to be such a good thing to have all this technology, it makes one stop and think about how far we have come in such a short amount of time.
There can be so many dangers on the internet, and with things like myspace and facebook, this just makes it easyer for predators. Because teen spend so much time online, statistics show that 72% of missing children, from an internet related problem, are fifteen or older. This is the age where parents stop monitoring their child as much, but this may be at just the wrong time. Students need to realize that no matter how safe a site seams, the internet is still the internet, and there are always ways people can get around security.
Teens need to realize what is going on in our society, because someday, we will be the leaders of it. We will be the ones having to make all the important decicions. We often don’t think about this, but with so much technoogy, and so little people needed to run it, our skills are leaving us. If we look in the past, because of technology, so many people have lost jobs. We no longer need a skilled craftsman to make something for us. We have machines for everything. In the future, will machines and technology run our lives, more than we do? Or do they already….

Questions:
1. Is there a clear point of view? (position)
I really liked the points you made, and it was really well written. The point of view is not really that clear to me, though, because I didnt see the issue or opposition to the side. It all seamed to be facts about teen not getting enough sleep.I didnt really see an opinion, it was all facts. Good facts though!
2. Does the Op-Ed state the problem and solution simply?
You did a good job stateing the problem, but there was not really a solution to it that you addressed.
3. Does the piece address the counter arguments?
I didn't really see any counter arguments, because I could'nt really see any opinion.
4. Is the Op-Ed interesting?
The article itself was well written and very intersting. You had a lot of good facts, and did a nice job with tieing them all together to form your article.
5. Are the paragraphs organized logically?
The paragraphs were organized well, and you did a nice job starting the article off, with good facts.
6. Does each paragraph develop an idea to support the thesis?
I could exactly tell what the thesis was, but each paragraph supported the idea that teens do not get enough sleep, and you did a nice jo of telling us why.
7. Is the writing clear?
The writing was very clear. I could understand averything you were saying and it was formated very nicely. I could understand what you were trying to say throughout the whole thing. Nice job!

Questions:
1. Is there a clear point of view? (position)
Yes -- against abortion
2. Does the Op-Ed state the problem and solution simply?
Yes -- you made it clear that abortion is wrong, and that women who have abortions should be treated as murderers.
3. Does the piece address the counter arguments?
Yes -- You did a good job with telling about what others will argue is right about abortion, then giving really good reasons why that is wrong.
4. Is the Op-Ed interesting?
I thought it was very intersesting. I agreed with your side, and you even made some new points that I had never thought of before. You had good facts tied in, which made you argument stronger. The whole thing was very strong and I could hear your voice in it.
5. Are the paragraphs organized logically?
Yes -- they were well done, with each adressing a part of the issue completely, then moving on. You also started with a nice intro, and at the end ended it well with a good conclusion, always reminding of why abortion is wrong.
6. Does each paragraph develop an idea to support the thesis?
Yes -- Each paragraph told what others think, then you tied it back to your thesis of why it is wrong, and did so very well.
7. Is the writing clear?
Yes -- the writing is very clear. You got to the point and made it, yet you had a lot of good information about everything in it. I liked your voice and it made me want to read on to see what you felt about other peoples arguments.

1. What is a problem/issue that our entire student body (our school, community, country, etc.) faces today?
~ Students that are addicted to technology, are becoming too impersonal. Now you dont even have to leave your house to do anything. It is affecting students people skills. Because everything from shooping to talking to friends is online. We are a generation of technology.
2. What is your view/position on the problem or situation?
~We should slow down on the technology being invented, and not use it as much, because it is ruining our people skills, affecting our health, and it can be dangerous.
3. What would you like to achieve with your editorial? (What is the desired result?)
~I would like people to see and realize what technology is doing to them and hopefully persuade them do do somthing about it.
4. How will you persuade your audience to adopt your viewpoint as theirs? List at least 4 persuasive points.
~I will get real facts
~ You dont have to leave your house or see anyone to do anything anymore.
~ Our generation especially is losing their people skills.
~ gaining weight has become moor of an issue since more and more technology came out.
~ Technology can lead to dangerous things that used to never even be problems.
5. How will you motivate your readership to action in your conclusion?
~ Urge them to do something before its too late to do something and everything turns virtual. And soon people wont have to interact with others at all, and we will rely solely on computers, and then they will end up taking over the world.
6. How will your editorial serve a public purpose?
~It will show our generation how all this technology, that can be so conveniant, is dangerous and affecting us and the world.

Making the College Voyage
When I was a lot younger, college seemed so far off. My mom would always tell me to start saving my money, or make sure to do a good job in grade school, so that someday when I was in college, I could do whatever I wanted. I always laughed it off, because I was like eight at the time and college was definitely not going to happen any time soon. It’s really amazing to me how fast years go by, and now college is so close, my applications are due this summer. I have always lived at home with my mom, and the thought of being on my own makes my stomach churn. Every time I think about it I get butterflies.
Going to college is an exciting part of a young adult’s life. That fraise seams so weird. I’m seventeen, and in one year I will legally be an adult. Gross! I will be on my own for the first time and many things will be new. With the growing population’s job descriptions demanding a college degree, more and more high school students find themselves applying for colleges, packing up, and making the voyage to extend their knowledge and be on their own. It’s amazing that in only a year, I will be joining them. According to the U.S Census Bureau, 15.9 million students were enrolled in colleges and universities across the country this past fall. Still, the transition from living at home, to being on your own can be a difficult one. But with 15.9 million students taking on this challenge just this year, it seems to me that it’s more than doable.
But what are the hardest parts of this transition? Is college only for those who are independent? I’ve never been a person who could sit by myself for long periods of time. I’m more of a ‘lets get together and study’ or a ‘mom, wanna help me with my math?’ person. But, in the case of 15.9 million what makes the transition so easy? College is definitely an attractive place for a fresh out of high school student. But challenges still come up for at least 70 percent of students. According to the Journal of American College Health, only 30 percent of college students in the United States did not gain a significant amount of weight within their freshman and sophomore years. “Schedules are different in college in that you’re not going from class to class,” my sister Jen Pagh, a sophomore at Concordia College in Moorhead, told me. “I find that it’s easier to make time to work out between classes, which are a new experience then when I was in high school”.
But eating habits are not the only problems that college students are faced with. The changes in schedules can be difficult for some to adjust to too. Going from a high school experience to college means you’re not always going to have seven classes, one right after the other. And, depending on your college schedule, classes may start later. But, managing your time seems to be a difficult challenge for some. My other sister Andrea, a junior at Luther College, confirms that, “Even though you may only have one, two, or three classes a day, the homework load is a lot more. I would say for every one hour you spend in class, you have two hours of homework out side of it.” So this change for me or others may come as a surprise, or even a kick in the face. But college is meant for learning, and most students seem to be able to handle that that is why they are there. “That’s what I’m mostly worried about!” explained my best friend Carly Odegard, a junior at Eastview like me. “All of the work we have now in high school is going to, like, triple!” It will be a lot more work, but I also think, and have heard, that there is a lot more choice in what you are doing, and classes you are taking, so hopefully you are studying something you are very interested in.
With so much studying for classes and all the time it takes, one would think that there would be no time for co-curricular activities. I myself find that as a high school student I get pretty busy with everything from school, to after school activities. I enjoy the after school activities more, but to some, in college that has to change. “College takes a lot of time, and though other activities are fun, no matter what, your there to get an education, and your paying for it.” Andrea adds to that, that she does play golf for the team, and feels that you do need to take some time to have fun, and get out of your studying space. College is definitely a place where more studying than playing should occur, but for my sister’s friend, that is not the biggest worry.
Andrea Hateli, another junior at Luther College and an only child, stated that “Having to make my own bed time was the hardest part of adjusting to college life. When I was at home my parent would always tell me when to go to bed”. Although this may seem like a petty and almost silly statement to some, when I really gave it some thought, it does make sense. How many of you high school students really and truly are not told to get to bed. The nagging may seem annoying, but when we are still living at home, we are, whether you like it or not, under the influence of our parents. It may seem that you have freedom, but until you are alone and don’t have someone waiting up for you, that is when true freedom takes place.
To some the freedom of actually living on your own may be a challenge. “The net is not there anymore, mom can’t wake you up if you sleep through your alarm.” Jen Pagh adds. The funny thing about it is that although teen across America want more freedom, and are constantly telling their parents to leave them alone and not treat them like kids, we still get mad in the morning when our parents are not there to wake us through our too quiet alarms.
So, although, making the college voyage may be a hard transition to some, to others it comes easily. I find that most students have something to adjust to. What exactly that will be for me is still a mystery. Whether it is finding time to stay healthy, study, or even go to bed, challenges never fail to come up. But, with the majority high school students going to college, including all my friends, it proves to be more than doable.

Kelly Brown Peer Edits:
1. What are some areas that could use more detail? Why?
I liked the beginning, but mabey add some more aboutthe relationship the kids had with their mom, so we really understand how close they were/are.
2. What additional sources might the author use? Does the lead involve you in the story?
I liked that you used a source that was a part of the planning, but mabey add a source that was a participant, or B.J and his sister. Or even a donor. See what made them want to do it. Or it would be cool if you found someone else who had or knew someone with that desiese, and see what they think about the hoop-a-thon.
3. Do the first 450 words contain a well defined scene (a detailed description of someone doing something or something happening)? What is it? If not, make a suggestion for a scene that might work.
I like the first 450 word scene. It worked well with the two kids and their mom.
4. What questions would you like answered in the next 300 words? What would you like to see or hear more of? Less of? Include, any other suggestions you have for improvement.
I would like to see what happened to their mom. But I reall like it so foar! Nice work!

Anaina Martin Peer edit:
~ More detail could be used when you talk about your high school expeirience. What have you done in high school? What are some of the memories you will take with you?
~ I thought all the sources were good. You had some college age and some younger and still some the same age as you. It's a nice variety! I also really like your lead. It made me want to read more, and I could connect with it, because my cousins and I used to do similar things.
~ The first 450 words do have a good scene of you and your cousins setting up for battle. I liked it. It worked well to lead into the rest of your story.
~Since you've already finished it, there is not much to add. I love the way you ended it. You could possibly add some more reasons of why you feel the way you do. Are you nervous for college, and why?
nice job with the whole thing. It really all ties together nicely.

~Since you've already finished it, there is not much to add. I love the way you ended it. You could possibly add some more reasons of why you feel the way you do. Are you nervous for college, and why?
nice job with the whole thing. It really all ties together nicely.

Making The College Voyage
Going to college is an exciting part of a young adult’s life. You’re on your own for the first time and many things are new. With the growing population’s job descriptions demanding a college degree, more and more high school students find themselves applying for colleges, packing up, and making the voyage to extend their knowledge and be on their own. According to the U.S Census Bureau, 15.9 million students were enrolled in colleges and universities across the country this past fall. Still, the transition from living at home, to being on your own can be a difficult one. But with 15.9 million students taking on this challenge just this year, it seems to many that its more than doable.
But what are the hardest parts of this transition? Is college only for those who are independent? Or in the case of 15.9 million what makes the transition so easy? College is definitely an attractive place for a fresh out of high school student. But challenges still come up for at least 70 percent of students. According to the Journal of American College Health, only 30 percent of college students in the United States did not gain a significant amount of weight within their freshman and sophomore years. “Schedules are different in college in that you’re not going from class to class,” Says Jen Pagh, a sophomore at Concordia college in Moorhead, “I find that it’s easier to make time to work out between classes, which is a new experience from being in high school”.
Andrea, a junior at Luther College, confirms that, “Even though you may only have one, two, or three classes a day, the homework load is a lot more. I would say for every one hour you spend in class, you have two hours of homework out side of it.” So this change for student may come as a surprise, or even a kick in the face. But college is meant for learning, and most students seem to be able to handle that that is why they are there.
With so much studying for classes and all the time it takes, one would think that there would be no time for co-curricular activities. I myself find that as a high school student I get pretty busy with everything from school, to after school activities. I enjoy the after school activities that I do more, but to some, in college that has to change. “College takes a lot of time, and though other activities are fun, no matter what, your there to get an education, and your paying for it.” Andrea adds to that, that she does play golf for the team, and feels that you do need to take some time to have fun, and get out of your studying space. College is definitely a place where more studying than playing should occur, but for some, that is not their biggest worry.
Andrea Hateli, another junior at Luther college and an only child, stated that “Having to make my own bed time was the hardest part of adjusting to college life. When I was at home my parent would always tell me when to go to bed”. Although this may seam like a petty and almost silly statement to some, when it is really given some thought, it rings true. How many of you high school students really and truly are not told to get to bed. The nagging may seam annoying, but when we are still living at home, we are still, whether you like it or not, under the influence of our parents. It may seam that you have freedom, but until you are alone and don’t have someone waiting up for you, that is when true freedom takes place.
I find that most students have something to ajust to. Wheather it be finding time to stay healthy, study, or even go to bed, challeges never fail to come up. With the majority highschool students going to college, it proves to be more than doable.

All of the money that was raised by Voices Of Hope, went to the Angel foundation. The Angel foundation is a organization that helps people and their families that are struggeling with cancer. The foundation was thnkfull to be choses as the representative at this large event that lasted all day and into the night. A check made out to the Angel Foundation will be presented at a ceremony as soon as all of the proceeds have been added and counted. This will hopefully be a huge step towards a better life for those who have cancer or have been effected by it.
The founders of the whole idea for Voices of Hope was from the woman's choir, at Eastview, called Woman's Choral. At least one of the girls in that choir has a mother who has cancer, and life has not exactly been easy since. The money that goes to the Angel Foundation helps people with cancer be able to pay for things like treatment, food, or event bills. One thing is for sure, the voices heard at Voices of Hope were all singing strongly and for a purpose. The purpose was to help cancer victims.
"Voices of hope was such a success!" Exclaimed Hannah, a senior at Eastview High school, who is a part of the women's choral. She was so excited to see all of the people who participated in this event that will help so many people. " I really think that this event was a really fun and great way to help a lot of people" Because of students like Hannah, who helped plan and run this event, Eastviews chiors, students, and staff could all participate in the plan. And throughout the day people all agreed with Hannah, it was a success..
Voices such as Hanna's, Maddy Koefedd's, Kelsey Anderson's, and many many others were heard all day and night at this event. It went way into the night, and ended with a great band named Ferris. They were and all boys band that ended up being a huge hit. The whole event turned out amazingly and is sure to help many, many people.

There are 5 freedoms in the first amendment....
~ Speech
~ Assembly
~ Religion
~ Press
~Petition
The first amendment does not regulate the behavior of private schools. However, state law or school policy could provide legal protections....
Tinker Standard - Supreme court case that recognizes that the first amendment protects on-campus student speech. Neither students nor teachers "shed their constitutional rights of freedom of expression or speech at the schoolhouse gate"
The Fraser Standard - He gives a ten minute speech containing all sexual inuendos. He gets suspended. He sews for the freedom of speech. Goes all the way to the supreme court. he loses. Because school officials have an "intrerest in teaching students the boundaries of socially appropiate behavior".
The Hazelwood Standard - School newspaper with articles about teen pregnancy, devorce, teen marrage. The u.s supreme court rules that schools have the right to censor issues if they think that it goes against the teaching of the schools. The ruling was related to teaching concerns. In the mind of teaching, consorship can occur if it goes against what is being taught.
The Fredrick Standard - Students make a sign that says obsene things and it goes on t.v. They are not on school grounds, and principle comes over, takes the sign, and suspends them. They rule for the school, because it was a school activity.
