Final Editorial:
With the majority of students in school being technologically smart, much of the youth in our country are failing to realize the dangers in all this advancement. Our generations people skills have completely deteriorated, as well as our caring for others as much. Also, a lot of teens do not realize the dangers that online technology can create.
We no longer have to leave the house to do anything. We can shop, chat, do homework, and play games on-line. Although we are now connected to each other more than ever, it is not in the same personal way that it used to be. Even when we are forced to be around other people, like sitting on the bus riding to or from school, we have ways of keeping apart. Our i-pods, cell phones, and other devices can make sure that we never have to get out of our comfort zone and talk to anyone other than our best friends.
Along with our people skills, our health is going down the drain with it. We can sit all day never having to get up, burn a few calories and see or do something in person. Now even some school is online. According to the Distance Education and Training Council, four million students are taking classes online currently. If we keep going at the pace we are going, soon not just college will be online, but high school too. Jobs will be lost, and students speaking and negotiating skills will deteriorate even more. Although it seems to be such a good thing to have all this technology, it makes one stop and think about how far we have come in such a short amount of time.
There can be so many dangers on the internet, and with things like myspace and facebook, this just makes it easyer for predators. Because teen spend so much time online, statistics show that 72% of missing children, from an internet related problem, are fifteen or older. This is the age where parents stop monitoring their child as much, but this may be at just the wrong time. Students need to realize that no matter how safe a site seams, the internet is still the internet, and there are always ways people can get around security.
Teens need to realize what is going on in our society, because someday, we will be the leaders of it. We will be the ones having to make all the important decicions. We often don’t think about this, but with so much technoogy, and so little people needed to run it, our skills are leaving us. If we look in the past, because of technology, so many people have lost jobs. We no longer need a skilled craftsman to make something for us. We have machines for everything. In the future, will machines and technology run our lives, more than we do? Or do they already….
